VERSTAPPEN WINS IN ZANDVOORT
Verstappen has taken a controlled win at his home race and the first Dutch driver to win his home race and the first to win around Zandvoort since Niki Lauda for McLaren. Verstappen's closest title contender Hamilton finishes second with the fastest lap and Valtteri Bottas finishes third and the final driver to finish on the lead lap.
It was an even start from the front two and Verstappen retained his lead, it was very clean opening lap and Max already had a gap of over 1 second after just one lap.
It was on lap 10 when Max Verstappen reached 1000 laps lead being the only Dutch driver to ever lead an F1 race let alone reach 1000 laps lead
The first major stop came on lap 21 when Hamilton pitted it was not the quickest stop with a 3.6 second stop coming out third well ahead of Gasly in fourth and now behind Bottas who takes second.
Just one lap later Max makes his first stop taking just 2.7 seconds - Bottas now inherits the lead - Max comes out now in second with 2 seconds clear of Lewis in third.
It took Max just eight laps to catch Bottas but with little overtaking spots around the track it could be difficult to overtake the Mercedes and it could bring Hamilton ever closer.
But it didn't take long - just one lap in fact before Verstappen overtakes Bottas for the lead followed by a cheer from the crowd. Bottas then allows Hamilton pass and gives Lewis second dropping himself back into third.
And just one lap after his overtake for the lead Verstappen already has a seconds gap over Lewis and Bottas comes in and pits and is in able stay in third.
On lap 40 Hamilton pits again with a 2.5 second stop coming out in second but is caught in traffic which doesn't really slow his pace as he makes it past Russell and Ricciardo on the same lap.
Verstappen and Red Bull pit a lap later as a reaction to Lewis’ stop - its a 2.1 second stop and Max keeps the lead he exits the pits with around a 2.8 second gap back to Lewis in second.
On lap 44 Mazepin (Haas) retires and six laps later Tsunoda is in the pits to retire his Alpha Tauri
It was yet another stop for Bottas as he pits and it was a 5 second stop - Bottas immediately begins setting purple sectors and is told over the radio to slow down but despite following the orders he still goes quickest and this forces Mercedes to pit Lewis for fresh tyres to take the extra point back which he does on the 72nd and final lap.
Verstappen now leads the championship.
The next race is the Italian Grand Prix.
