PIASTRI WINS A TENSE HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX TO BECOME THE 115TH DIFFERENT WINNER IN F1
McLaren were by far the quickest car in this race with Norris finishing 13 seconds clear of third placed Lewis Hamilton. But the story of the day is Oscar Piastri winning his first ever race in Formula One becoming the 115th different driver to win a race and the seventh different winner this season. Hamilton finished in third as previously mentioned which is his 200th podium in Formula One.
It was an exciting start to the race as they head into turn one THREE WIDE as Oscar Piastri leads from Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and his teammate Lando Norris (McLaren) in third. However is wasn't plain sailing for Verstappen who went wide into turn one and clearly gained an advantage over Norris and will have to give the position back to the McLaren.
It took four laps and a lot of complaining but eventually Verstappen complies and gives the position back to Norris - McLaren regain their 1-2.
The first pits from the top five came on Lap 18 when Lando pits from second and rejoins in fifth place.
The top five is now Piastri, Verstappen, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) and then Norris.
On the very next lap race leader Piastri pits and comes back onto the track ahead of his teammate but the three cars ahead of him are yet to pit so Piastri has the net race lead at this point in the race.
On Lap 22 Verstappen pits from the lead and Sainz follows him in. Leclerc now leads from the two McLaren’s. Leclerc looks to be going for Plan C or to you and me a one stop race.
Lap 24, Leclerc pits. Piastri leads.
The first move from old rivals Max and Lewis came 35 laps in when Verstappen tries a move on Hamilton for third but runs wide into turn three and Hamilton keeps the position.
The disappoint continues for yet another weekend for Alpine and Pierre Gasly who is retired from the race. A Hydraulics issue for the Alpine.
With ten laps remaining Norris leads from Piastri in second with Hamilton in third followed by Verstappen and Leclerc in fourth and fifth.
With just seven laps to go...
HAMILTON AND VERSTAPPEN MAKE CONTACT INTO TURN ONE!
Verstappen remains in the race but drops back behind Leclerc into fifth.
And then with two laps left in this race and a lot of discussion over the radio Norris concedes the lead of the race to Piastri who has the simple job of keeping it on the track and taking the chequered flag.
Piastri becomes the seventh different winner in 2024 and the 115th different race winner in Formula One.
The next race is the Belgian Grand Prix.
