OSCAR PIASTRI DENIES HE WILL RACE FOR ALPINE IN 2023
Former F2 and F3 Champion Oscar Piastri has been confirmed for the second Alpine seat alongside Esteban Ocon for 2023, after the news broke that Fernando Alonso would be leaving the team to join Aston Martin to replace the retiring Sebastian Vettel.
Piastri's junior career record shows why the Australian driver deserves a chance at the very top of motorsport. In 2020 Piastri joined Prema Racing in Formula 3 after winning the Renault Eurocup the year previous.
In his first season in Formula 3 Piastri achieved;
2 Wins
4 Fastest Laps &
6 Podiums
Which gave him a grand total of 164 points enough for the title in his rookie season. After this type of form in his first season in F3 Piastri was awarded with an F2 seat for 2021 staying on with Prema - Oscar dominated the 2021 F2 season achieving;
6 Wins
6 Fastest Laps
5 Pole Positions &
11 Podiums
Despite the dominance and double WC on the bounce Piastri was unable to find himself a race seat with the two Alpine seats covered for the next few years.
Piastri becomes the 18th Australian driver to race in F1. Piastri is managed by Mark Webber.
EDITED: On Tuesday 2nd August 2022 - Alpine F1 Team released a press release saying the Piastri would be promoted to a full time race seat for 2023 alongside Esteban Ocon but just a few hours after the press release - Piastri took to Twitter to tell the world he would in fact not be racing for the Enstone based team which lead to speculation that he would replace fellow countryman Ricciardo at McLaren.
